Making a Difference for Haitian Families

twoboysSionfonds grew in response to the needs of Haitian families and our belief that all children, each mother and father, brother and sister, and grandparent should have the right to live together as a family. We  grew from our knowledge that with very little assistance many families in rural Haiti would not have to give up their children, so that they might have enough to eat, an education or  any hope for the future.

Since 2004 we have been educating and supporting Haitian families with the generous donations of caring individuals, who want to directly assist Haitian families. Sionfonds is a registered 501c(3) non profit organization. All of our staff outside of Haiti are volunteers which means that all of the money donated to us to help Haiti goes directly to Haiti. In Haiti we are Haitian. We work tirelessly to help better our country through education and capacity building projects that will ensure the stability of Haitian families and the future of our country.

Finding the Words, Making a Website

Finding the Words, Making a Website

It would be hard to imagine a more grassroots or organically grown organization than Sionfonds for Haiti. So much so, in fact  that we have grown, mostly, without being aware of it. what I mean to say is we knew we were growing and working and doing important things for the families we serve, we did not however, create a plan in advance to explain how or why we do what we do. Children do not explain or plan out why or how they must grow they just do it, and so it has been for Sionfonds. We have grown because of the inherent need of our mission, to help Haitian families.

Creating this website has necessitated that we step back and attach words and concepts to what we do and have done, in order  to be able to represent our organization in a way that will give us validity on the web, with our donors, funders partners and the world wide web in general. I think most organizations start from the other end of things. They have an idea or see a need, write proposals and grants, get funding and then start working. We were working before we had funding. It is the work, the vision that drives us, I think we are this way because Sionfonds is inherently Haitian which means we cannot wait for money to live. We must live in faith that living will triumph.

Creating the website and learning how to portray Sionfonds and our work in Haiti has been a challenging and friutful experience. Getting clear on who we are, what we do and why we do it, has been very rewarding and I hope it will allow us to communicate clearly with you and anyone else who takes the time to visit our website.

Two words are at the heart of what we do, Capacity Building. We are laying the foundation for Haitian families, to rise out of poverty. Capacity building is not an overnight fix, but the history of Haiti has proven that there are no quick fixes. It takes time and dedication to create change and empowerment through understanding and education. Hopefully this website will also lay the right foundation for our donors to understand how important their contributions are. How important it is that we support Haitians teaching and empowering each other.

On our old website home page  we had the saying.

“Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life time .”

Sionfonds for Haiti  work is  still as simple and complicated as that.

Education is the Key to Building Haiti Back Better

Education is the Key to Building Haiti Back Better

Education is the key to building a strong foundation on which to build.

Sionfonds has been working to educate children and support families in Haiti for many years, well before the earthquake. We have done this in a variety of ways we have projects that provide opportunity and nutrition as well as education, but without education, opportunity will not be utilized affectevly and a full belly will be empty tomorrow.

Haiti has long been known as the ‘poorest country in the western hemisphere’  and was ranked 148th of 179 countries on the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index in 2009; 76 percent of Haitians live on less than $2 per day and 56 percent on less than $1 per day, and that was before the earthquake, the situation in Haiti has gotten much worse since January 12th 2010.

The issues  facing Haiti can be overwhelming.

Everyday life in Haiti is overwhelming, but it is possible to affect change.  The answers are not simple but, if we start at the roots of the issues and build up from there we will create an opportunity for real change to take place. Education first, and then we address what gets in the way of education; malnutrition, illness, everything that is the result of extreme poverty and we work on those, little by little we make a difference.

Education is the foundation on which change will be made possible for Haiti, on which the children of Haiti will grow up and be able to create a country that will no longer be known for what it lacks but for what it has become.
